Yes. Bowsite.com owns Bowhunting.TV. It will be integrated into several sections of Bowsite.com and will become a major draw like our popular forums and features.
We talked with You-Tube but ultimately decided to pursue our own video clip inventory rather than attaching to theirs. You-Tube is certainly a good venue to share your clips with; however it can’t be integrated and cross referenced across Bowsite like Bowhunting.TV. We don’t suggest you stop posting on You-Tube, but rather upload your clips on both. There’s no reason to be exclusive.
Bowsite.com has pioneered most of the features and technologies now copied on other hunting websites. We were the first to produce a “Live Internet Hunt” we were the first to incorporate “Streaming Video” in features, we were the first to produce online hunting games, archery classified ads and uploaded photos which resized and compressed automatically. We have played around with video sharing concepts for years but the technologies were too immature until just last year. At that time we made the decision to pursue a video sharing service to compliment our Web 2.0 initiative which means “visitor-generated total media.” Bowhunting.TV is the product of that vision.
Simple; search engine placement and branding. We had purchased this domain name in 2002 as soon as it became available but had nothing substantial to attach to it. We knew we would create a video sharing site at some point and simply held onto this domain name until we were ready. It is also an easy address to remember; just type in www.bowhunting.tv or simply bowhunting.tv in your browser.
The following are slated for 2Q2008: Feature articles, State Forums, Big Game Forums, Harvest Reports, Classified Ads, and Outfitter Reports. We also have these new sections slotted for 3Q2008: Hunting Blogs, and Trail Camera forum. You will only have to upload something once in Bowhunting.TV and it can be attached to these sections seamlessly.
Video sharing technology is complex. The code developed to upload and convert
video is affected by thousands of factors out of our control such as the

Windows 98, XP or
We feel the amount of video uploaded will be manageable enough to be reviewed. If we get more content than we can reasonably review, or excessive abuse is noted, we will require registration like we do on all of our forums.
Bowhunting.TV uses Flash Media technology which is installed in over 98% of all browsers. This is the same technology used by You-Tube and other video sharing services. The most likely problem is that your version of Flash is outdated. We require Adobe Flash player 9x and above in order to play videos. You can download it FREE from Adobe.
Assuming you have the current Flash player, then your employer is likely blocking streaming video as part of their Internet content enforcement policy. Check to see if you can play You-Tube videos or other streaming media clips from other sites. If not, then your employer is blocking them at the firewall.
Currently we have tested and certified Bowhunting.TV on
Windows platforms including XP and
I am still on dialup, can I use Bowhunting.TV?
No. It will be useless on a dialup connection because the files are very large. If you have High Speed Internet (Cable, DSL, or Wireless) then by all means switch over as more websites, including Bowsite.com, will be designing their sites to accommodate broadband content exclusively in the future.
There is an old saying in the computer world: Garbage-In, Garbage-Out. This means the original file was probably compressed as a small size for dialup streaming or a lower speed download. We have our conversion servers set for a good balance of quality and download speed, however if someone uploaded a clip that was 320x240 and highly compressed, it will look awful when we convert it to 400x300 with medium compression. We have no control over that. Examples are the clips uploaded by Pat Lefemine from his live hunts over the last 10 years. These were originally encoded for a smaller size and higher compression than we utilize on Bowhunting.TV. So they don’t look as good as they could, but still acceptable.
We’ve integrated the same search technology from our
popular Bowsite.com forums into Bowhunting.TV. You can simply search for a keyword
associated with the title, description, or user name. If you know the video
came from Bill Clinton; just search the keyword “
Yes. For example, if you want to see kill shots from Kansas:
go to the theme drop down and choose “Kill Shots” then go to the
State drop down and choose “Kansas.” You may hit any of the submit
buttons on the screen. The system
will display only Kill Shots from
Over time we hope to have an inventory of videos from every state and province. Keep checking in the future. Better yet, upload your own and be the first!
You have to have a clip already on your computer in the following format: FLV, AVI, WMV, MOV, or MPEG. The clip must be 100mb or smaller in file size. Assuming your clip meets those criteria, you are good to go. Simply fill in the form for Step1 and attach your video in Step2. Bowhunting.TV’s video servers do the rest.
I uploaded the file OK but it was rejected with a
“File size too large” error?
Unfortunately, due to security settings on many PCs, we decided to pursue a
server size checking routine rather than one that runs on the browser.
The upside is there is not client side code which could be blocked by security
software. The downside is the server needs the entire file before it can check
the size or the file type. The system will allow you to upload an
unauthorized format (something other than FLV, AVI, MPEG, WMV, MOV) but it will reject and delete it when the upload is complete. We are still looking at client-side
options as we realize the frustration of waiting to upload a file that
ultimately gets rejected. Until we find the right solution, we strongly urge
you to check your file size and file type prior to initiating the upload
process.
You will need a software package that can take your large video file and convert it to a reasonable size for uploading. Many newer PCs have software pre-installed for this function. While a video editing package will do this for you, you don’t necessarily need a complicated editing program. There are many packages available that can help you perform this step easily and inexpensively. One that I recommend is Moyea Flash MX. You can purchase and download it here.
Yes. For best results, use these settings:
Video Dimension = 400 x 300
Video Frame Rate = 30 Frames per second (FPS)
Bitrate = 10,000 or 10k.
We recommend encoding your video as a Windows Media File (WMV) or Quicktime Movie (MOV) for best results.
After you upload your video, the server will queue it for conversion and initiate that step in the order it was received. So if 10 people upload a video at the same time, your clip will get in line for conversion in the order it was recieved. After conversion, the video is not displayed publicly until an editor approves it. That step can take from several minutes to an entire day depending on the availability of our video approvers. If your clip does not show up after a day, then the conversion likely failed. Please contact us for an alternate upload method.
Inappropriate subject matter or clips unrelated to archery or bowhunting is all we are looking for. We are not looking at the content worthiness.
Because a lot of video has been shot during outfitted hunts, or hunts using many of our sponsors’ products, we are displaying the sponsors’ Ad when viewing the clip. This is as much a service to you as it is for them. Many people will be interested to know the outfitter used when watching a kill-shot video. It also provides us with a unique way to add value to our sponsorship programs. Even if you do not represent the sponsor, if you used their product or service, you can display that along with your clip.
Themes yes, but animals are unlikely. We should already have an animal category for any critter you can stick an arrow into. If you have any theme suggestions, we’d welcome them.
For now, you can not. We are considering this for a future release.
No, that is attached during the encoding process and becomes part of your video clip.
You bet. Under the description is a code button. Click that and cut and paste the code (in its’ entirety) within your web page.
The BTV-Code is used to integrate your video clip into other areas of Bowsite.com quickly and easily. Wherever you see a Bowhunting.TV BTVCode text box, you can enter the video’s BTV and the clip will be attached to that submission.
Simple, go to Bowhunting.TV and click the upload button. Fill in the title and other pertinent information. Under THEME, choose Classified Ad and Upload your video. Once it is approved and available on Bowhunting.TV you will see a BTV-CODE. Copy this BTV-Code. Now go to the classified Ads page and start a new Ad. You will see a box labeled VideoBTVcode. Enter your code in that box. Your clip will be automatically attached to your Classified Ad.
Follow the same instructions above however the THEME doesn’t have to be Classified Ad, it can be anything.
